How we work

At the CBA In-House Lawyers, we carry out our vision and mission from coast to coast to coast.

Bronze statue of Lady Justice holding a balance scale and sword stands in front of a large sunlit window, symbolizing fairness and law. The figure is blindfolded, representing impartiality.

At the national level, the CBA In-House Lawyers is governed by its regulations and the bylaws of the CBA. Led by our President, our Board of Directors is made up of 21 members responsible for advancing the work of the CBA In-House Lawyers. They ensure the necessary resources for our operations, and oversee the outcomes of our advocacy, programs and activities.

The local CBA In-House Lawyers Sections are organized by geographic location and governed by the provincial Branch to which they belong. Each CBA In-House Lawyers Section has a representative who sits on the Board.

The CBA In-House Lawyers Committees are made up of volunteers from across our membership who help shape our services and promote in-house counsel within their organizations and the legal profession.

Our Executive Director leads the CBA In-House Lawyers operations and manages our team so we can support and serve our members.

CBA governance

The Canadian Bar Association (CBA) is governed by a President, supported by a 15-member Board of Directors. The CBA Board represents the diversity of Canada’s legal profession, including practice types, experience, skills, geography and more. All provinces and territories have a seat at the table. CBA Board members are elected by the current Board of Directors, Branch presidents and National Section chairs.

Each member serves a two-year term. Board member terms are staggered so only some of the Board change each year.
